Ram Island is a spectacular 16 acre island with approximately one mile of coastline. The island is accessible at any tide with four stone beaches and a protected cove with a mooring.
This unspoiled island rises gradually to a height of 60 feet and has green meadows as well as dramatic cliffs. Ram has only one tree and several sheep. It is all grass meadows and rock. Ram is a real island that lies out in the ocean, several miles from the mainland - very secluded, yet not barred to the mainland at low tide like many islands. Ram Island is magical and still completely natural. The tide in this part of Maine rises and falls 19 feet. This changes the shoreline in the most dramatic way. Exploring the coastline is one of the main island activities.
There are breathtaking views of the ocean and the other nearby islands from everywhere on Ram. To the east is Libby Island lighthouse and to the north, Stone Island and the mainland. To the south is the open ocean – nothing in front of your eyes for 180 degrees - just the broad ocean. This is a wonderfully private part of the coast of Maine. Even though you can see other islands and the mainland, you are alone. There are no other dwellings visible in any direction, however everyday (except Sunday) you can see and hear the lobster boats hauling pots out from around the island. There are minimal building restrictions in this part of Maine, far less than one would encounter further down the coast. The main restriction is not to build within 75 feet of the high tide line. You can build your dream home high above the cove and sit on your deck and look out over the distant islands. This is an opportunity for someone to create an incredible legacy for their family. There is a deeded easement on the mainland for parking, and storage of your car and boat. On the island itself there is only a 20'x20' pressure treated tent platform. This sits above a small cliff overlooking the cove and the mooring. It's all you really need!
Ram Island is located at the mouth of Machias Bay, just 5 miles from Rogue Island, which has the second largest white sand beach in Maine. The island is located 10 miles from Machias, which has a small airport. It's 60 miles from Bar Harbour and its large airport. The island is a six hour drive rom Boston.
