The History of Richardsonian Romanesque Architecture & the Malley Estate.
Built in the style of architect Henry Hobson Richardson, whose work was popular from the 1860s to the turn of the century, his design is often seen in churches, university buildings, and railway stations.
Richardson based his architecture on that of the ecclesiastical style of the Middle Ages, which featured Romanesque and Gothic details with massive, stony walls and half-round arches. The historical monument of Trinity Church in Boston’s Copley Square is a prime example of Richardsonian Romanesque architecture.
Richardson was the most influential architect of his time. After Trinity Church was built it became the most fashionable style of architecture in America. It was used to build everything.
The Richardsonian Romanesque period came on the heels of the Civil War, a time of change and hesitancy, which may explain the desire to have such sturdy homes. It radiated a kind of substantiality with floods of immigrants coming into the States at the end of the 1800s, the demography of cities was changing. The rich felt a need to protect themselves with fortress-like homes from the poverty that was sprawling outward from city centers.
The construction of a Richardsonian Romanesque was very labor intensive. The stones used to build the homes, sometimes weighing up to a ton each, were brought in from quarries by laborers. Because of the cost, it is unlikely that an authentic Richardsonian Romanesque structure would be built today. Because of the unlikelihood of such a home being built today and the rarity of a Richardsonian Romanesque structure existing; the Malley Estate is a living Relic.
