Belize doesn’t always get the attention that its Caribbean neighbors do, but that’s part of what makes it worth a closer look. The country packs a surprising amount of variety into a relatively small footprint.

Along the coast, the Belize Barrier Reef is one of the largest in the world, drawing divers and snorkelers to its coral formations and marine life. Inland, the terrain shifts quickly from jungle to river to the ruins of ancient Mayan cities, some of which are still being excavated.

Wildlife reserves throughout the country protect everything from jaguars to hundreds of bird species, and a number of them are set up for guided walks or jeep tours that make it easy for visitors to see more than they would exploring alone.

For travelers who want a mix of relaxed beach time and genuine adventure without an overly developed tourist infrastructure, Belize remains one of the more underrated destinations in the region — a place where it’s still possible to feel like you found something before everyone else did.
