Recognized as one of the most architecturally outstanding early-20th Century estate homes in America, the mansion was built between 1902 and 1907 as the country residence of George Crocker, the son of one of America's great railroad pioneers. The mansion is listed on the United States National Register of Historic Buildings.
The architect for the mansion was James Brite of the renowned firm of McKim, Mead and White. Brite and his partner, Henry Bacon, later prospered with notable works including the original Madison Square Garden, the Public Library in Jersey City, the American University in Washington, DC and the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC. The interior woodworking of the mansion is by John H. Elliott, a famed master carver in Philadelphia from the 1880’s to 1930’s. The chandeliers and murals in the mansion are by Tiffany Studios. The mansion is designed after Bramshill House in the UK which was built in 1612 for Prince Henry, the son of King James I.
