Traditional stone fronted cave house in the sleepy village of Carramaiza, a pretty white village set in the side of a south facing hill side with uninterrupted views of the Sierra de Baza and Sierra Nevada.
Maintaining a cool temperature of around 17 degrees all year round the cave is refreshingly cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Featuring 3 double bedrooms, large dining room/living room with wood burning fireplace, fully equipped kitchen, social/tv area with another wood burner and bathroom with a huge mosaic bath. Outside is a bbq area with a large table and benches.
With 4 large lakes nearby and surrounded by national parks the Fairy Grotto is in a perfect location to explore, some of the activities available are quad biking, hiking, fishing, cycling, paragliding, horseriding and watersports. Of course you may just want to chill out, meditate, practice yoga & enjoy the peace and tranquillity of the beautiful surroundings.
Carramaiza is incredibly peaceful, yet near enough to the town of Cortes de Baza (7kms) to not feel too isolated, here you can go out and enjoy the many bars, get your shopping in one of the two small supermarkets or go for a dip in the outdoor public pool (July and August only) which is reputed to be excellent. There are even three nightclubs hidden away in this little town!
There are many local fiestas throughout the year in various villages, there is a small fiesta in Carramaiza at the end of April & in Cortes de Baza in august.
There are many pretty villages to visit in the area such as Castril with its spectacular gorge walk, Huescar - a larger market town & Orce with its archealogical museum.
The main lake of the area is called Lake Negratin you can drive around this in a big loop taking in the sights and the towns on the way, starting with Crotes de Baza, on through Benaumaurel with it's rock face of empty caves (that have a sheer drop at the mouth of the cave!). Next you reach Baza, a large town about 40kms from the cave, it has big supermarkets, including Lidl, clothes shops, post office, many bars and other amenities you expect to find in a large town. Follow round to Zujar, here you can go to the thermal baths in the foot of the mountain. Next on to Freila, a pretty town that overlooks Lake Negratin and has it's own beach. Further round on this road there are two bar/restaurants overlooking the lake (perfect for a drink and free tapas), at the second bar there is a nautical centre that offers watersports. Travelling on you reach Cuevas del Campo and then Pozo Alcon, another large town with many shops, banks and bars etc. Just after Pozo Alcon you reach Lake Bolera (can be easy to miss as it is sunk low behind the trees!), there is a lovely bar overlooking this lake that is well worth a stop at. Finally you come through the small rural village of CampoCamara before returning home.
You will be met on arrival by an English speaking lady who will give you the key and answer any questions you have. She lives locally so can tell you where to visit and what to do if you need some ideas. She will also help you out should you have any problems or questions during your stay.
A welcome hamper is supplied on arrival with items like milk, bread, pasta, sauce and wine. There is an information booklet in the cave with a few details on the cave and the area. |
