Santa Maria, the southernmost island of the Azores group, is not only the sunniest and warmest, but also the one with the best sandy beaches, lush subtropical vegetation and friendly, amiable inhabitants. The hamlet Terra Velha is located above the really beautiful bay, São Lourenço, and is the most spectacular location on the island. In addition to peace and being off the beaten track it has a splendid view of the Atlantic.
The »Gozo da Ilha« (Island Pleasure) house has just been built by us, and we have incorporated various charming stylistic features of traditional country cottages. It has 60 m² (646 sq. ft) of living space plus 34 m² (366 sq. ft) in the loft. The house is divided up into a large kitchen-cum-living room (27.2 m² / 293 sq. ft), a bedroom (19.5 m² / 210 sq. ft), a bathroom (6.0 m² / 65 sq. ft) and hall (7.3 m² / 79 sq. ft) as well as two loft storeys. There is a south-facing terrace.
The land belonging to the house amounts to about 4,000 m² (one acre). We have planted different types of flowering trees close to the house and seven plane trees up on the drive. Power and phone lines have been routed underground so that the idyllic views will not be adversely affected.

It is 2 km (1.2 miles) from the nearest village, Santa Bárbara, which has shops selling groceries and a pub. It is also 2 km away from the sandy beach of São Lourenço (there is also a nearby footpath leading down). It is 11 km (6.8 miles) to the largest town on the island, Vila do Porto, which has supermarkets, restaurants and shops of all descriptions. It is 13 km (8 miles) to the airport.
