History of the Island Wakaya Island is one of 360 islands that form the Fiji Group in the Pacific Ocean. It is an island with great history and its beauty has been preserved as it has been privately owned for over 100 years. Wakaya has a reputation in the Pacific as being one of the most magical and unspoiled islands.
Captain Bligh of Bounty fame recorded the first sighting of Wakaya on his great open voyage in 1789. In 1830 the Chief of Levuka from the nearby island of Ovalau laid siege to Wakaya. Rather than be defeated the whole population jumped to their deaths from Chieftains Leap. In 1917 renowned German sea pirate Count Felix von Luckner was captured on Wakaya.
Wakaya Island lies in the Koro Sea, in the Lomaviti Group of Islands. It is approximately 12 miles north east of Levuka, Fiji's former capital and now a conventional township. It is 30 miles north east of the current capital Suva, on the main island of Viti Levu, and around 45 miles from Nadi where the international airport is located.
The island is serviced by sea and by air. Planes can be chartered from Fiji Air and Air Wakaya. Flying time is approximately 25 to 45 minutes.
