What to see in Ventimiglia

Ventimiglia is the last important town before the border to France. The town rises at the mouths of the river Roia and is very ancient: There is  an archeological area where numerous ruins from Roman times can be found , especially those of a Roman theatre.

The old Ligurian town, which is typical medieval rises on a promontory overlooking the entire valley.

Under the domination of Genoa, during the war against the other Maritime Republics, it had become a defence outpost.

Make sure to visit the Cathedral dellŽAssunta ( in engl. Cathedral of Virgin Mary) with the annexed octagonal Battistero( in engl. babtistery) , the Biblioteca Aprosiana (in engl.  Aprosian Library) the magnificent Giardini Hanbury (in engl. Hanbury Gardens), today a nature park full of exotic plants from all over the world and the Romanesque-style Chiesa di San Michele (in engl. Church of Saint Michael).

11 km from Ventimiglia you can visit the Balzi Rossi( in engl. Red Crags), one of the most famous prehistoric sites of the Mediterrenean.
